Shapefile to KMZ Converter — free & private

Drop a zipped ESRI Shapefile and get KMZ instantly. Runs fully in your browser. No uploads.

Tip: If Google Earth struggles with big datasets, reduce/simplify first — and prefer KMZ over KML for smaller files.

Why KMZ?

  • Smaller than KML (zipped).
  • Easier to share/download.
  • Works great in Google Earth.

If your file is big

  • Use Shapefile Reducer to simplify or batch large datasets.
  • Export polygon-only for AOIs/boundaries.
  • Open the full editor to clean/merge/buffer polygons before export.

FAQ

Do I need to upload my Shapefile?
No. Everything runs locally in your browser.
What is KMZ?
KMZ is a zipped KML (a ZIP file containing doc.kml).
What should be inside the .zip?
At minimum .shp and .dbf. Including .prj helps detect CRS.
Does this work with polygons?
Yes. You can optionally keep only Polygon/MultiPolygon before exporting.
Why do my features show generic names in Google Earth?
Choose a property field (like NAME) as the placemark title in the tool. Otherwise Google Earth may show defaults.
My shapefile is huge — what should I do?
Try the Shapefile Reducer to simplify or batch large datasets before exporting to KMZ.
